Coeliac Disease

If your child has been diagnosed with Coeliac Disease, this means their body reacts abnormally to a protein commonly found in wheat, rye, barley and oats called gluten. Children can develop the disease as young as just 6 months of age, usually in conjunction with transition to solids containing gluten.

Colonoscopies

Most adults have had a colonoscopy at some point, yet we often don’t associate this procedure with children. However, in the same way it is used in adults to check the health of the digestive system, it is also used regularly in diagnosing children with gastrointestinal symptoms.

Constipation

As our children grow from infant to toddler and beyond, their bodies go through significant growth milestones and changes. Introduction of solid food happens for most babies by the time they are one year old. Then, as their sense of taste develops, they can show preferences for, or refuse certain foods. Constipation in children can occur for many reasons, most of which are not cause for concern and will self-remedy in a few days.

Diarrhoea

Diarrhoea is a symptom caused by a range of gastrointestinal problems. Depending on the severity and length of time your child experiences diarrhoea, it can lead to other potentially serious issues such as dehydration. It can be triggered by bacterial or viral infections, food poisoning, some auto-immune conditions, or allergies.

Eosinophilic Oesophagitis

Eosinophilic Oesophagitis

Despite its perhaps unfamiliar title, Eosinophilic Oesophagitis is actually quite prevalent, affecting 1 in 1000 people. A chronic allergic inflammatory disease of the oesophagus, EoE can produce symptoms including reflux, trouble swallowing, choking or gagging, food regurgitation, and stomach pain.

Feeding Tube Insertion

As we know, not all children develop at the same rate. When this is due to chronic difficulties with feeding that impact your child’s nutrition and growth, this can have a negative impact on the entire family. In some instances this may be due to a physiological disorder of chewing and swallowing where gagging and vomiting occur during eating.

Gastroscopy

If your child has regular or ongoing discomfort or pain in their stomach, it could be due to a whole range of causes. A gastroscopy is a quick and painless procedure which uses an “endoscope” or thin tube with a camera at the end to examine the inside of different parts of the upper digestive system.

Infant Feeding Difficulty

Feeding your infant can be a joy and time for bonding, but for some parents it is not always easy. This can be for a variety of reasons and is in fact quite common. Between 25%-50% of children can have trouble feeding, or for developmentally delayed infants this can be as high as 80%-90%.

Recurrent Abdominal Pain

When your child complains about abdominal pain, it is usually minor and often recedes within a 24-48 hour period. Common causes for this pain include viruses, constipation or even anxiety. However, when the pain has no known cause, is severe enough to restrict activities, and occurs at least 3 times over a period of as many months, this is referred to as recurrent abdominal pain and should be investigated.

Reflux

Reflux is very common among infants and young children after eating and in most cases resolves by the age of one. Generally it occurs as an occasional regurgitation of the contents of the stomach, and may be due to a weakness in the muscle that acts as a valve between the oesophagus and the stomach that rectifies over time.
